In Fall, 2019, with the support of the Mellon fellowship, Dr. Yarris taught her Global Mental Health course (INTL 467/567) by engaging students in research related to the Morningside project. For their final term projects, students worked in groups on topics of their choosing, some of which related to the history of psychiatry and alternatives to psychiatry. Here, we share two stellar term projects, the first of which focuses on the history of asylums in the U.S. and presents a comparison of several psychiatric hospitals, including Morningside. This project was completed by the following students: Ava Tajbakhsh, Emma Glaunert, Alex Merigian, Hajar Albattah, and Taylor Wayland. The second presentation explores alternatives to psychiatric treatment, particularly those proposed by “CSX” (consumer/survivor/expatient) groups in the U.S. This project was developed by these students: Brielle Waff, Rachel Lamb, Katie Owens, and Sierra Burke. Both projects display the creativity and originality of undergraduate student research at UO, and the interdisciplinary nature of global mental health research.
